Executive Director & Staff of the Organisation
The Board appoints and empowers an executive director to carry out the aims of the organization. The Board shall work the Executive director to ensure that the values of professionalism, transparency and accountability permeate all activities The executive director will be responsible for the recruitment of other Horn of Africa Center for Peace staff except the other management team within the annual approved budget and work plan.
The executive director will consult with the Board before hiring any staff member. The chairperson of the Board and the executive director of the organization shall work closely to ensure that a good working relationship and effective communication exists between the Board, staff and other constituents. In general, the Board concerns itself with the overall vision, strategies and policy of the organization and leaves the routine day-to-day management of the organization to the executive director. The executive director attends Board meetings as a link between the Board and the staff.
The executive director shall be an active participant discussion at Board meetings but doesn’t have the right to vote. Only Board decisions taken at Board meetings and duly recorded are considered binding and should be conveyed through the chairperson to the executive director who then communicates them to the other staff. Staff carries the activities of the organization as supervised by the Executive director. The Executive director represents staff at all Board meetings and provides regular written and verbal reports to the Board regarding staff activities and expenditures. The Board may request the attendance and reporting of other staffs at any Board meeting.
The Board shall conduct an annual performance appraisal of the executive director based on performance objectives agreed at the beginning of the year. The executive director of Horn of Africa Center for Peace will inform the Board by email of its intention to apply for new funding or projects. Consent from a quorum of the Board will be required for Horn of Africa Center for Peace to proceed with the application. If a Board member doesn’t respond within 7 days, it will be assured she/he has provided consent.
The following presents five core responsibilities or guidelines that the executive director may explore in trying to assess their priorities in successfully running the organization.
- Create a vision.
- Lead and manage.
- Engage the community.
- Manage financial/fundraising.
- Support the Board of directors.
- Cessation of the Executive Director position is by:
- End of contract.
- Dismissal by the Board by four or more votes in accordance with Horn of Africa Center for Peace’s personnel policy.
- Death.
- Resignation.
